Poor health has forced my retirement from coaching at the age
of 36. Well, since football is still a huge part of my life (365 days a year),
I have found a way to coach players without being on the field. I have learned
from, coached with and coached against some of the finest coaches in the country.
Along the way I have felt the pain of not winning a game and the elation of
winning consecutive high school football state championships. I know there is
something more that I can learn each day and it is my hope that I can help others
do the same. By hiring me as a consultant not only will you be getting help for
your team, but you will be helping continue do the thing I love most in life.
Together we can work together toward one or more short-term goals going into the
season. As we achieve these goals we can work toward long-term goals. A good
example of this is how we built the program up at my last coaching job. After
opening the season without scoring a point in the first two games, the first
goal was to simply score. The second goal was to win some games. The school
had won perhaps a dozen games in a decade. Making wholesale changes was not
going to work. We had to go with what we had, but find ways to see what we were
doing wrong and fine tune everything.
This philosophy would be put to the test that upcoming weekend. Our opponent
was coming off back to back state championships, so simply scoring would be a
huge victory for our players. Not only did we score that week, but we came just
short of beating them as we missed a 2-point conversion with no time remaining.
We easily could have gone for the tie, but we needed to let the kids know that we
believed in them.
Our long-term goal for the season was to finish with a winning record. Well,
not only did we achieve that goal, but we ended up winning the state championship.
With most of our starters returning the next season we gave ourselves a new set
of goals to reach. The next season we repeated as state champions. It was at
that point that we realized we needed to set even more long-term goals. No
longer were we a team looking to win games. We were a team looking to build a
program.
We graduated almost everyone from the two state championship teams and finished
a disappointing 5-6 the next season. This was a good thing. No longer was
there just the satisfaction of winning a few games. With each season came
great expectations and only our best football would be acceptable. The next
season we finished 8-4 and lost the State Vocational Bowl. It was truly a
disappointing season
Perhaps the greatest thing that we had achieved was gaining the respect of all
of our opponents. A great many actually feared us. No longer were we the W you
put on your schedule before the season even started. Teams that beat us every
season now refused to play us.
We can work together to find out what is holding your program back and what steps
need to be taken to turn things around. Whether you are a team looking to
become competitive or one looking to go from being competitive to championship
caliber, I am positive I can help. The first step is realizing that we all have
our faults and there is always room to improve. The coach that believes they
know it all and does not feel the need to take steps to continuously improve
their craft should think long and hard about calling it quits.
If you do decide to usemy services there are several things that we should go
over.
Contractual Relationship:
Although neither the sponsoring organization nor the consultant can be sure at
the outset of the exact nature of the problem or problems to be dealt with or
how long the consultant's help will be needed, it is essential that some
tentative agreement on these matters be reached. The sponsoring organization
needs to know generally what the consultant's preliminary plan is, what its own
commitments are in relation to personal commitments and responsibility for the
program, and what the counsultant's fee will be. The consultant must assure
himself that the organization's commitment to change is strong enough to support
the kind of self-analysis and personal involvement requisite to success of the
program. Recognizing the uncertainties lying ahead on both sides, a termination
agreement permitting either side to withdraw at any time is usually included.
